A contemporary Home Story

Every object, space and home has a story to tell. I love telling stories about affordable elegance, styling vignettes and improvement tips. With this story, of contemporary elegance, I am adding a new category to my blog called 'Home Stories' where we will be touring beautifully designed homes and leisurely enjoy the creative stroll.


Architect Shobhan Kothari who designed this 2500 square foot apartment in a Mumbai High rise, for an erudite well travelled couple with two young boys, says that the design narrative was worked on simple and pure form of structure, allowing not much changes in the layout with a very rigid structural grid. The place was imagined as a cozy home vibe: neutral colors, dark wood and vibrant objects. These objects were then blended with handpicked modern design, to lend a riveting story to the minimalistic and unique décor. 

 The apartment opens into a warn welcoming wooden foyer vibrantly designed with photo frames that ushers you into a sprawling living dining. Two flats have been joined to form one apartment, occupying the entire floor, hence the home got an east bank and west bank concept after the removal of the wall that separated the two apartments. The living room plays the protagonist that holds the two ends together. The master suite is on one side of the living room while all the other rooms are on the other side. As seen in the pictures the living room has a large span of windows on one side, literally touching the clouds, and a panoramic view of Mumbai city. Large sofas are arranged with their backs against the windows while smaller seaters with a view are opposite them. The entire ceiling in the living and dinning is a wooden expanse with multiple pendant lights. In the daytime the west window throws in copious natural light. There are two seating arrangements. The formal grouping near the entrance and the more relaxed one near the bar.






The master bedroom surprises with a distinctive vista at the entrance. Part of the ceiling is vaulted thus echoing the curved outline of the bevelled mirror which stands on the floor. The flooring is wood laid in interconnecting tiles which draws inspiration from the curves of the mirror. The master suite has a lounge as well as 'his n hers' walk in wardrobes. 





The children's room has an attached games room as well as two baths for the two boys. The bedroom has bunk beds and the decor is that of a tree house with multi-colored steps (finished with Duco paint) and a hanging rope to complete the picture. A rainbow colored settee under the window which also provides for storage in the room add sprite to the space. Duco and paint has been used keeping in mind that as the children grow up subdued tones can make the room more age appropriate. The attached bath with lego wall behind the mirror and basin counter that appears to be suspended by ropes like a swing make for an apt boy's bathroom. The decor well speaks of an innovative space for children to be nurtured in their growing times.




The Kitchen has simple maintenance free dado and shutters. All the attention is focused on the flooring which is a pattern made out of vitrified tiles.


The Study is a masculine space in leather and mustard colored cabinetry. It has a relaxed calm about it.


This is my first post on the home story section and I would like to sum it up with key take aways from this home tour:
A home designed with prime attention on flow and circulation always works.
Modern design riveting around a minimalistic decor with vibrant color pops can help to add a spacious happy look.
Master bedrooms can be cozy and comfortable with a touch of class and style.
Children's room can have the dynamism to easily change mood with the growth of the child. Fun and color pops can make growing up fun. 
Kitchens can be easy maintenance and yet have oodles of creative spunk in it.
Home stories are all about sauntering through lovely homes, getting inspired and whipping up great stories for your own space.

    What a magnificent interior concept befitting of a sprawling apartment. The neutral colour play is the key element in expanding the visual dimension as well as keeping the ambience soothing to the soul. The children room is uniquely a masterpiece. So too are the other spaces including the kitchen. A blend of comfort, decor and coziness is bound to enhance the living quality for the occupants. It is definitely a wonderful introduction by words, visuals and perspective. Excellent reading.
