A hotel with a traditional yet contemporary twirl

Traditional art blended evenly with contemporary designing can form a winning combination. It is, as I have mentioned before, one of my favourite design languages. I have implemented this narrative in a recent home that I completed. While discussing this with some of my architect friends I came across hotel, Lakend, Udaipur, that architect duo Khushboo and Kunal Khandelwal have designed. The design has taken brilliant cues from the royal heritage of Rajputana and fused them with modern comfort. The design capitalizes on the scenic location thus striking a dialogue between heritage and landscape and accentuating the flavour of the destination too.

The design exudes an inherent rich heritage where subtle motifs have been designed taking cues from traditional artwork dovetailed with hints of contemporary flavour. Heralding a luxurious air, as one enters the premises, the entry foyer greets you with a calm and an artistic aura. The transitional spaces accentuates the concept of leisurely lounging in majestic resplendence. The arches, cornices, flooring pattern, wall pattern and jaalis are concepts that can encourage you to imbibe them while designing your space to give it a sensitive artistic rendition.

The rooms are understated with richness weaving a timeless elegance. To echo the flavour of this fusion-design-form the choice of colour plays a defining role as seen in the images. A combination of wood/gold with royal shades of blue/green/orange/grey with moulded frames for mirrored headboards, cornices, beaten metal-work, textile patterns all collaborate to reinforce the air of regality. You could draw inspirations from them for your bedrooms and even accessorize other areas of your home on these lines and patterns.

Detailed textural environment differentiated through materials, keen detailing in designing, clever use of bountiful rich colour shades, indigenous workmanship and modern day artwork influenced from traditions, all sum up to this multifaceted trend of heritage meeting contemporary that makes for a sharp style statement whether it be a aesthetic home or a leisurely hotel.

  2. Very well written post on fusion of the heritage and contemporary design grammars. As a matter of fact, such blend is largely visible in the state of Rajasthan not only for hotels and resorts, but equally for private houses, apartments buildings, commercial buildings, et al. Detailed textural environment differentiated through prudent use of choice materials, artistically detailed designing, smart use of vibrant colour shades, traditionally skilled craftsmanship coupled with modern day creativity inspired by traditional art forms and folklores synthesise harmoniously to deliver the canvas of awe and excellence to such architectural examples. Rajasthan, as such, is Royalty and Regal indulgence does lend authenticity in the absolute. I must congratulate the highly talented architect duo Khushboo and Kunal Khandelwal for having designed this gorgeous and strikingly beautiful Hotel Lake end in Udaipur.
