Tips for a one day quick tour of Jaisalmer city

Jaisalmer known as 'The Golden City', is a world heritage site that harbours massive castles, scenic rainwater lakes and honey-golden sand. Ideally a couple of days would be more apt to cover this magic world etched in the sands of time but in this blog we will talk about covering the stunning in just a day.

We arrived early in the morning to the most prominent on the visit list, the Jaisalmer fort. Being one of the largest fortification in the world, the citadel is a tawny lion colour that roars loud of its strong heritage. Ninety-nine bastions encircle the fort's still inhabited honeycombed narrow lanes. The winding streets are lined with homes, guest houses, shops and restaurants.

We entered the fort from the east amongst buzzing tourists and locals, relentlessly climbed through massive gates and many a zigzagged path to make it to the upper part. The final gate opens into the square which is the fort's center and called 'Dashera Chowk'. Here we indulged in the luxury of steaming masala chai, some nibbles and then moved on. Dodging the dense of people and shops (with quaint trivia) in these twisted lanes, stopping briefly to admire the carved Havelis concealed in these narrow streets, we made it to the top, at the canon point, for a breathtaking view of the sandstone city of Jaisaslmer. It is hard not to be enchanted by this desert citadel. It is a must visit once in a lifetime.

After a quick grab of a minimalistic lunch en route, we head to our next stop, a man-made, scenic, rainwater lake, made by Raja Rawal Jaisal, the first ruler of Jaisalmer. The Gadsisar Lake.

The lake welcomes all with magnificent and artistically carved yellow sandstone archways. This lake was the only source of water for the city in the olden days and now is a delightful boating experience. Due to its proximity to Bharatpur, if you are lucky you can even see different migratory birds adding to the scenic view of the lake. The uphill lane leading to the lake is splurged with ethnic shopping and interestingly even varied designs of hats, to beat the scorching sun.

The entry is free and the boat rides have a slim price tag. The boating timings are from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

The city, Jaisalmer, is a warm golden hue, rising from the sandy plains with volumes to speak of times bygone. History, heritage, architecture and culture form the backbone of this city. What we did is cover a quick visit in a day, to absorb the essence and soul of the city. A day was good enough to potentially take back with us the splendor of this sandstone city, spread like a shimmering mirage in the Thar Desert of India.
